JC's Guide Service
I used to take three young guys fishing every summer. They all loved discovering new waters, shore lunches and going after big trout. One day 13 year old Rich and I were returning from a fruitful fishing expedition in Oregon's Cascade Mountains. As we wove our way down the mountain back to the Rogue Valley I commented that, unlike Max and Alex, Rich had yet to catch a trophy that summer. We’d all agreed that a trophy was a trout measuring at least 20 inches. Rich was quick to retort, "What do you mean, no trophy? Wasn't that Bald Eagle a trophy? And what about watching the two otters run all over the beaver dam where we canoed today? Sneaking up on those huge bull elk in velvet…hey, that was some kind of keeper. Jim, that armload of wild flowers you let me take home to Mom…that was a trophy for sure!"
Dog gone, this guy was right on track.
It struck me that our adventures were more than just about catching and releasing fish. I served as their fishing guide for sure. But even more so a Life Guide to boys who needed a little nudging to become fine young men.
That’s what JC’S Guide Service is about…offering reflections on fishing and suggestions for making the most of life.
In this part of JimLarsen.Net you’ll see how the great outdoors, fly fishing in particular, has hooked me. Then too, since I've been a pastor for four decades, a college instructor for fifteen years and a sojourner on the planet for (yikes!) sixty, maybe there will be a little gem here and there to help you in relationships and such. Welcome to the back porch of my heart where we can tackle matters that matter.
One of my greatest joys is helping guys put their hand in the Hand of the
Mighty One. Walk with me, please. Borrow articles, poems and pointers. JC pulled
me from wild waters when I was drowning. Now He is my Life and my Guide. I'm delighted
work as one of his crew. I dedicate this site to Him.
